The house
Built by hand
A West Coast timber frame by Salt Spring builder Robert Langevin, completed in 2003 and converted to a residence in 2020. Japanese joinery runs through the structure, with hand-crafted beam vaulted ceilings overhead. Floors are reclaimed wide-plank Douglas Fir, tatami and slate; doors and trim are vertical-grain yellow cedar. Large windows and sliding shoji screens let in the light. A Renaissance Linear 50 wood-burning fireplace with heat redistribution warms the house, and radiant floor heat serves select areas.
